Tous les détails:

As air pollution concentrations increase, physical activity participation decreases.  As the climate continues to warm, extreme wildfire seasons will likely increase; therefore, air pollution from wildfires may affect physical activity and the associated health benefits.

By guiding CSEP practitioners through current evidence, they will explore how to balance the risk of air pollution exposure with the benefits of exercise and how-to best advice clients during times of poor air quality, such as during wildfires. Participants will be introduced to the different types of air pollutants, their health effects, and implications of air pollution exposure during exercise. In addition, practitioners will learn about strategies to minimize the health impacts of air pollution during exercise.  By completing this workshop, practitioners will be better positioned to counsel individuals about exercising in air pollution, which is particularly important in the era of climate change and the increasing prevalence of wildfires.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe common air pollutants, their sources, and the health/ physiological impacts of air pollution exposure during rest and exercise.
  • Interpret the Canadian Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) to draw actionable insights.
  • Describe strategies that clients can implement to minimize the health impacts of air pollution exposure during exercise.
